Geothermal Innovation in Focus: Dr. Hye Chowdhury’s Lectures at COMPASS Iceland Week

05 Jun 2025 2 min read

The Sustainable and cost-efficient Concepts enabling green power production from supercritical and superhot geothermal wells (COMPASS) project arranged a series of programmes in observance of COPMASS Iceland Week from 13 to 16 May, 2025. As a part of the week-long programme, an International Summer School was offered to geothermal enthusiasts: 35 participants from 17 countries and 5 continents. The two-day school provided training on high-enthalpy geothermal systems and included expert lectures, a poster session, and a field visit to the IDDP-2 well at Reykjanes, hosted by HS Orka.

Hye Chowdhury, Lead Technologist at Technovative Solutions Ltd, delivered a lecture on “Cost and Environmental Impact Estimators for Well Completion utilising hot or superhot geo-resources” in the first session of Day 1 to the participants. He introduced two digital tools developed to support geothermal well completion through this lecture, which are cost estimator and environmental estimator. The cost estimator calculates the per-metre cost of well completion, considering the total costs of casing, laser cladding and cementing materials, including freight, casing and cementing services’ costs. The environmental impact estimator for well completion evaluates the environmental performance in terms of 1 m of drilling activities using user-inputted and default data populated in the COMPASS Database Management System (DBMS).

On the second session of the same day, he delivered another lecture on “Cost and Environmental Impact Estimators for Surface Plant Utilising Hot or Superhot Geo-resources”. During this lecture, he discussed features, functionalities, and implications of the cost estimator and the environmental impact estimators for surface plant software applications.

As the geothermal sector continues to strive, the knowledge sharing through International Summer School during COMPASS Iceland Week, especially in the sessions led by Dr. Hye Chowdhury, will empower the next generation energy professionals to make data-driven decisions for a sustainable future.
