On February 4 and 5, 2025, over 40 project partners from 9 countries convened in Athens, Greece, for the kick-off meeting of Climate-Adapt4EOSC, hosted by the project coordinator Demokritos - National Centre for Scientific Research.
Climate-Adapt4EOSC is a four-year initiative, funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101188248). Running from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2028, the project aims to advance open science and data-driven innovation to support climate adaptation research and resilience across Europe.
A Collaborative Effort for Climate Resilience
Despite the growing urgency of climate adaptation, researchers face critical challenges such as fragmented data platforms, poor interoperability, and limited access to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data. The project specifically empowers researchers across multiple disciplines to tackle climate change more effectively by providing an advanced, EOSC-centred collaborative research environment. This environment integrates existing EOSC data and services while introducing new datasets and innovative features, such as FAIRification and Mapping and Entity Matching capabilities.
The project will create a climate change adaptation ontology and an EOSC Climate-Adapt Knowledge Graph, enabling enhanced findability, accessibility, tracking, and life cycle management of diverse research outputs. By fostering interoperability and innovation, CLIMATE-ADAPT4EOSC will significantly strengthen the capacity of European scientific communities to address climate change. The project activities will equip researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders with advanced tools to strengthen climate resilience while directly contributing to the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change and the European Green Deal.
Key Innovations and Deliverables
Over the next four years, Climate-Adapt4EOSC will develop:
- Climate Adaptation Ontology – A structured framework improving data organisation and interoperability.
- EOSC Climate-Adapt Knowledge Graph – A dynamic tool enabling efficient data access, tracking, and lifecycle management.
- AI-Driven Analytics Tools – Supporting climate risk assessments and evidence-based decision-making.
- Five Interoperability Frameworks – Ensuring seamless data exchange between platforms and services.
- Four Cutting-Edge Services
- OPENHIDRA – Integrating hydrological and climate data.
- Shrink-Swell from Space to Earth (3SES) – Monitoring soil shrink-swell risks via satellite data.
- Digital Twins for Just Climate Urban Resilience (Just CURS) – Simulating climate-adaptive urban planning strategies.
- Big Data Analytics (BD Analytics) – Offering large-scale climate data analysis capabilities.
