AI and Climate Adaptation: Dr Mostafa Kamal Sarker on Technovative Solutions' Role in Climate-Adapt4EOSC

On 4–5 February 2025, the Climate-Adapt4EOSC project held its official kick-off in Athens, Greece, bringing together over 40 partners from nine countries. Among them was Dr Md. Mostafa Kamal Sarker, Head of AI at Technovative Solutions Ltd (TVS), is representing TVS in its role as a core contributor to the project’s AI and analytics work.


We had the opportunity to interview Dr Sarker about his experience at the event, as well as TVS’s role in the Climate-Adapt4EOSC project:


What was your experience at the Climate-Adapt4EOSC kick-off event? Were there any key discussions that particularly stood out to you?

Dr Sarker: The experience at the kick-off meeting was fantastic. All the consortium members came together for an open discussion on the project’s work packages, deliverables, and limitations. The project mapping was conducted efficiently, and the organisers, particularly the host and project coordinator Demokritos, did an amazing job.

One of the most valuable aspects was the interaction among partners, which helped shape future collaborations. TVS had a fruitful exchange with Codata around data management, ethics, and legal compliance, which will be critical moving forward.


How do you see Technovative Solutions contributing to the project, especially regarding disaster resilience and data-driven solutions?

Dr Sarker: For the Climate Adapt4EOSC Project, TVS is creating a big data platform that will serve as a foundational service for climate resilience. This tool has significant potential in risk assessment for climate scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Additionally, TVS is leading the design and architecture of the project's dataspace, which includes creating workflows and predictive models to assist with climate risk management.


AI is playing an increasingly important role in climate adaptation. How does Climate-Adapt4EOSC plan to leverage AI to enhance data accessibility and decision-making?

Dr Sarker: The dataspace we’re building, combined with open-source data that is undergoing FAIRification, will be processed through our platform to deliver risk assessment outputs. We're already training AI models with big data to support domain-specific tasks—essentially making it easier for scientists to assess climate-related risks using predictive analytics.


One of the major challenges in climate adaptation is dealing with fragmented and unstructured data. In your view, how can AI-powered solutions improve data interoperability and usability?

Dr Sarker: While AI in this project isn’t directly creating interoperable data, it is leveraging interoperable datasets to generate meaningful insights. We follow specific templates that ensure compatibility, and once the data meets interoperability standards, AI can effectively analyse and extract value from it.


What unique expertise does TVS bring to the AI aspect of this project?

Dr Sarker: TVS brings strong experience in big data analytics that can be applied to climate-related domains. For example, tracking land use changes, detecting wildfires via satellite imagery, or assessing usable agricultural land over time. We're currently working with an initial version of the model, trained on five million data entries. Our next step is to perform domain adaptation, fine-tuning the model for specific climate applications.


What upcoming activities are planned for the project?

Dr Sarker: We’re preparing for a general assembly on 8- 10th July in France, organised by Artelia, one of the project partners. This meeting will be crucial for aligning all consortium members on the specific data requirements, which are essential for training user-specific models.

We are also aiming to publish a scientific article in a journal or conference within the next six months based on the outcomes of our current dataset model. However, if we receive all the necessary data by July, we expect to complete and validate the use-case-specific models by the end of the year.

As Climate-Adapt4EOSC gains momentum, Dr Sarker and the Technovative Solutions team are focused on delivering tangible, data-driven tools that will strengthen Europe’s climate resilience efforts.


With advanced AI models, a robust data platform, and strong collaboration across partners, the project is well-positioned to bridge the gap between complex climate data and actionable insights.


The upcoming months will be pivotal, not only for refining use-case models for the Climate-Adapt4EOSC project, but also for setting a new standard in how AI supports climate adaptation across borders.

Dr. Md. Mostafa Kamal Sarker, PhD, is currently the Head of AI at Technovative Solutions Ltd. He is also a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford.
